12/31/2011 — 4.0 magnitude earthquake in east Ohio — MAN MADE — epicenter near quarries and an INJECTION WELL

December 31, 2011

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Youngstown area in east central Ohio.

I think this was another case of “induced seismicity” — commonly called a man-made quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the 4.0 magnitude quake struck Saturday afternoon in McDonald, outside of Youngstown. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Many have struck near an injection well used to dispose of brine water that is a byproduct of oil and gas drilling. The injection well owner agreed this week to stop injecting brine into the earth while the quakes are investigated.

This screenshot below shows the area of the earthquake epicenter… clearly you can see the quarry to the east and to the north (also a large quarry to the south east by 2 miles).

Just this past week, we saw an additional  2.5 magnitude in the same area —- which after doing research proved to be caused by the ‘Salt Springs’ quarry located a few hundred feet away from the earthquake epicenter.

here is the link to this past weeks story from the same spot:

here is a screenshot of this past weeks quake / quarry .

Overall, it seems the edge of the craton keeps on moving — as shown by these series of earthquakes over the past few months.

Here is a screenshot of recent earthquake activity (on the right) compared with a diagram of the craton edge (on the left).
