1.8-magnitude earthquake strikes on South Shore
A 1.8-magnitude earthquake shook the ground in Plympton early Tuesday, officials said.
The temblor struck at 3:44 a.m. in the area of Center Street, according to records from the US Geological Survey. It originated about 4 miles below the ground.
Although earthquakes are less frequent in the East, the USGS said, small quakes have been recorded since colonial times.
Plympton is a South Shore town about 45 miles from Boston.”
Minor earthquake in eastern Massachusetts
1.8 magnitude quake happened Tuesday morning in Plympton
“PLYMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The U.S. Geological Survey says that there was a small earthquake in southeastern Massachusetts early Tuesday morning. The quake, which was centered in the Plymouth County town of Plympton, registered in at a 1.8 on the Richter Scale.
An earthquake of that magnitude is generally not felt by most people, and does not cause building damage.
Small quakes are fairly common in New England. The eastern Connecticut town of Plainfield was hit by a series of earthquakes earlier this year, with a January 12 quake registering at a 3.3 on the Richter Scale. That quake was felt in parts of Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts.”
